Depending on how this painting is lighted, the effect of brightness of the sun going through the trees and the contrast with shadow is amazing. Showing this on a photo is  difficult; one of the most incredible lighting-effect of the collection 100 years of landscapes in France.

Though the signature is difficult to read, it's a typical landscape of mountains and river of this painter. Born in Bordeaux, he was painting ports, ocean, and landscapes in the Pyrénnées and  the Savoie. Belonging to the familiy of Alfred GODCHAUX, who died in 1895, Emile had exactly the same style . Still influenced by neoclassical style .

A very interesting impressionist painting, capturing a view of a little river and bridge and a water mill, in Barbizon. Eugène GALIEN-LALOUE painted this mill also, that painting being in another gallery of this site . MICHIELS  adds here an uncommon touch, with three artists on the bridge, painting or discussing the view. 
The bridge facing us is a major point of interest to the Barbizon and the Impressionist schools of art.
